Engagement photographs are great fun. Austin is a great place to shoot your engagement portraits too. I am very free and fun with my engagement pictures. I try to give rough ideas of what I’m looking for in a pose and let the clients’ imagination give some more structure to the images. This allows them to be a part of the creative process and gives me the ability to grab images that I wouldn’t have thought of. I used to structure it a lot more and found that usually doesn’t work when trying to get people to relax in front of a camera.
A lot of the engagements I photograph end up starting at the Texas Capitol if we are planning on shooting downtown because it’s nicely kept up and the parking is manageable. One of my favorite things about the Capitol is that it seems you can take pictures just about anywhere without breaking any rules. If the clients are big time Texas to the bone type of people we can shoot and make it look like the Texas Capitol or we can shoot and make it look like any nondescript park anywhere without making that many changes.
Like with anything Christina and I do, romance is the key and I work very hard to showcase the romance in the clients’ engagement pictures. I’ve shot very shy people before who felt really awkward in front of the camera but always manage to show the client in a way that shocks them, it looks so intensely romantic in the final product. I shoot easily some of the most romantic engagement portraits in Austin and love it every day.
